Two-step verification (also called 2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a temporary code from an authentication app when you sign in.
This guide walks you through:
- Downloading a two-step verification app
- Setting it up with your account
- Using it to log in on a browser-based app
What You’ll Need
- A smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android)
- Access to your account settings
- A supported two-step verification app (examples below)
- A web browser on your computer or mobile device
Step 1: Download a Two-Step Verification App
Choose one of the following trusted authentication apps:
- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Authy
- 1Password (built-in authenticator)
On iPhone (iOS)
- Open the App Store
- Search for your chosen authenticator app
- Tap Download and install the app
On Android
- Open the Google Play Store
- Search for your chosen authenticator app
- Tap Install
Once installed, open the app and allow notifications if prompted (recommended).
Step 2: Enable Two-Step Verification on Your Account
- Sign in to the app or service you want to protect
- Go to Account Settings or Security Settings
- Select Two-Step Verification or Two-Factor Authentication
- Choose Authentication App as your verification method
The app will display a QR code or a setup key.
Step 3: Connect the Verification App
- Open your authentication app on your phone
- Select Add Account or Scan QR Code
- Scan the QR code shown on your browser. (If scanning isn’t possible, manually enter the setup key instead.)
- The app will generate a 6-digit verification code that refreshes every 30 seconds
Enter this code in your browser to confirm setup.
Important: Save any backup or recovery codes shown during setup. These help you regain access if you lose your phone.
Step 4: Log In Using Two-Step Verification
When signing in on a browser in the future:
- Enter your username and password as usual
- When prompted, open your authentication app
- Enter the current 6-digit code shown in the app
- Click Verify or Continue
You’ll now be logged in securely.
